The town of Tropea, map-wise, is located at the toe end of the Italian boot, almost brushing up against Sicily. Legend has it that Hercules built this town. True, it does have a ring of supernatural strength to it. Built on the precipice of a vertical cliff-line, it’s near impossible to tell where the cliff ends and the buildings begins. There is no gap between rock and building and they share the same off-white color wash. Out to sea, and on an equally imposing rock, is the standalone Church of Santa Maria dell Isola. The contrast between these two white elephants and the ant-sized people sunbathing below couldn’t be greater. An incredulous reminder that this is the Coast of the Gods.

Just a few miles off Tropea, the steep cliffs, so brilliantly weather beaten take on the contours of beastly mythical creatures. Atop this dramatic cliff is the pretty town of Capo Vaticano. Across the horizon, in the distance, the Volcano of Stromboli spews its fury. On a boat straddling the two, you can’t help but feel like an ant caught in the middle of a duel between two indomitable titans.

Brightly colored boats bob in the harbor and a short stroll away is the kilometer long Beach of Sirens.
