Stepping back in time in this fortified city

In the western part of Britain, France, is the fortified city of Saint-Malo. The city has a few districts, the most popular being “intra-muros”, which means: inside walls. The tall walls that surround the old city are made of Granite, and walking through the tight streets will really make you feel like you stepped back in time. The Saint-Malo cathedral is at the center of the old city, the city where pirates approved by the king were once welcomed. Intra- muros, you will find many restaurants with all kinds of food, including typical Britain food: galettes, crepes, sausage, and seafood. You can take the stairs to walk around the old city on the walls, where you will have a beautiful view on the sea, where chartering a yacht is a great activity, especially in the summer.

Cruising around Saint-Malo

The first aspect you will notice when getting near the old town, is the very high quantity of sailboats moored outside the walls. You should definitely pack up some delicious food from the city, hop aboard a yacht, and sail towards Roscoff, passing by Perros- Guirec, Binis, Paimpol, Brehat, and many other places. If you charter a yacht in Saint- Malo for a whole weekend, you can set sail to Jersey, to enjoy some lively time at a Pub. For experienced sailors, this is also a great departure point to England or Ireland. Saint- Malo is also the point of departure, every 4 years, of the Rum route, where some of the greatest international and french sailors race to Guadeloupe. In 2014, Click & Boat was a proud partner with Airbnb of Herve de Carlan along this marvelous adventure.

Saint-Malo is a very good town to visit and has everything most people will need, but the Marina is not always accessible. From here, we went West along the coast to St Quay Portrieux - always accessible and with plenty of places to shop and eat, Lezardrieux - quiet, but we had a very good meal at the Auberge Du Trieux restaurant, and Paimpol - a lovely town well worth a visit, but you do need to catch the tide.

The region has lots of nice destinations, e.g. the channel islands (Alderney, Jersey, Guernsey, Herm, Sark, Ile de Brehat, Scilly Islands. Knowledge of tidal navigation is essential in order to come safely and quickly to your destination. The french cuisine with lots of seafood and fish is also worth to notice.

Anglo-Normands islands, quite a landscape ! Chaussey and Starck as our prefered. But you have to find your owns... Keep in mind that with such tidal height, a ship able to deal with is a good idea... Good idea too, to not depend (too much) on gross stores on the trip... Have Fun !
