Can I book a yacht charter in Athens with or without a skipper?

You have the possibility to book your dream yacht charter in Athens with or without a skipper. If you opt for a bareboat rental in Athens, you will be able to plan your own sailing trip according to your needs. You can travel at your own pace, stopping on different islands, bays, coves and beaches. There are many bareboat yacht charters in Athens which are available to book. However, we recommend checking if you have valid documentation for your trip. For many Athens bareboat yacht charters, a nautical licence is mandatory.

On the other hand, if you wish to enjoy your private yacht charter in Athens without worrying, we recommend opting for a skipper. A skippered yacht charter in Athens is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax and enjoy the stunning Greek islands without steering, mooring and anchoring. The certified skipper will be here to take care of all the sailing technicalities and logistics.

Biggest ports to dock at when you charter a yacht in Athens

Athens is located directly on the waterfront and is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. It is a water sports paradise, in which you will find several marinas, including:

  • Port of Piraeus
  • Alimos Marina
  • Flisvos Marina
  • Athens Marina
  • D-Marin Zea

The Port of Piraeus is the largest and most famous port in Athens, located 12km from the city and is probably the most important port in the Mediterranean. The Alimos Marina has one of the largest berth capacities in Greece, located 15 km from Athens. Most sailboats, yachts and catamarans are located in Alimos Marina.

Electricity and water supply are available in all ports. In addition, the lighting at the entrance to the port ensures easy entry for your Athens yacht hire. You will also find a petrol station, car park and restaurant here. Prices may vary with regard to demurrage. However, it is true that the demurrage in Greece is considerably lower compared to other European destinations. For one night in a Greek port, you often pay no more than £20, making an Athens yacht charter cheaper than a yacht charter in most other European countries.

What to do during your yacht charter in Athens?

Athens is the largest city in Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world. No matter if you go on holiday with friends or family, Athens has everything you are looking for. Often referred to as the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens is a city where memories of a glorious past merge with the temptations of Europe's most cosmopolitan cities. Athens is the world's oldest cultural centre, and despite difficult times, it is still buzzing with cultural events, from concerts and art exhibitions to festivals.

If you decide to visit the House of Socrates and Plato during your boat hire in Athens, you will have plenty of activities to do. An absolute must-see in Athens is the Acropolis, the upper city, which is recognised as one of the finest examples of classical Greek art and architecture. There, you will find the striking symbol of the city, the Parthenon - a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. In addition to the Parthenon, there is also the Erechtheum, known for its columns in the form of female figures - caryatids. We can guarantee that no matter what you choose to do, whether you opt for island-hopping boat trips from Athens or choose to see the city’s cultural and historical highlights, your day yacht charter in Athens is going to be an unforgettable one!

Island hopping during your boat hire in Athens

A boating or sailing holiday in Greece often starts from the capital, Athens, as you can easily fly from the UK to Athens at affordable prices. In addition, if you don't have a sailing licence, you can easily hire a boat with a skipper, meaning that it will be easy to set sail for the nearby islands in your Athens yacht charter. Athens is at the gateway of the Saronic Gulf, an archipelago with plenty of islands waiting to be discovered!

What are the most beautiful islands to visit during your yacht hire in Athens?

Greece is known as a country with rugged coasts, many islands and beautiful bays. Hiring a boat in Athens is the perfect way to discover the country. Athens is located directly on the waterfront and from several ports, you can easily go in all directions. Some of the most beautiful islands in Greece are Lefkas, Santorini, Zakynthos, Mykonos and Kefalonia. All are easily accessible with your Athens yacht charter.

Mykonos

Mykonos is one of the most beautiful Greek islands with its stone walls, and awe-inspiring architecture and is conveniently located quite close to Athens. Located in the Cyclades islands, Mykonos is known for its windmills, beautiful sea, long, sandy beaches and hilly areas. The most recognisable part of Mykonos is known as Little Venice, with colourful houses, facades and balconies. Mykonos is also the best island to go to with your Athens yacht charter if you love to party as there is a long line of beach clubs stretching along the waterfront, which play lively dance music for much of the day.

Zakynthos

Another interesting sailing destination to take your boat hire from Athens is the island of Zakynthos, where some of the most famous beaches are located, such as Shipwreck Beach in Navigo. Zakynthos is in the Ionian Sea and is a popular sailing destination, as it is perfect for island hopping. The picturesque island is a popular holiday destination known for its beautiful beaches, historic town centre and many vineyards.

The Sporades

The Sporades, consisting of several islands including Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, Skyros and some other smaller islands, is centrally located in the middle of the Aegean Sea. This is an excellent island group to visit during your Athenian yacht hire as there is a wide range of secluded coves at your disposal, which is perfect if you want some privacy when you go sailing from Athens.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in Athens?

If you’re wondering when you should hire a yacht in Athens, look no further. Athens’ Mediterranean climate is characterised by hot, dry summers, mild winters, and moderate rainfall, which make it ideal for a boat hire in Athens. In the summer, there is a swinging nightlife, with open-air bars and concerts from local bands that really help you to get in the summer mood. The hottest month is August, which has average highs of 34°C (94°F), which can be too hot for some people, especially if you’re not used to such heat.

In general, Athens is very crowded in July and August. For this reason, we recommend that you go between May and June or September and October. During these periods, not only will there be good sailing conditions, but there will also be fewer tourists.

If you really want to mingle with the locals, however, go in November. While the November weather won’t compare to the summer sun, you will have the opportunity to truly experience the city of Athens as a local would.

What do I need to charter a yacht in Greece?

To charter a yacht in Greece, you will need to have some sailing experience and be able to demonstrate your competence as a skipper. This can be done by providing sailing certificates, such as an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or a similar qualification. You will need to hold a valid license for the vessel you intend to charter. In Greece, a sailing license recognized by the Hellenic Coast Guard is required.

Do you need a passport on a private yacht?

The requirement for a passport on a private yacht depends on several factors, including your nationality, your destination, and the laws and regulations of the countries you plan to visit. Generally, if you plan to travel internationally on a private yacht, you will need a passport to enter and exit each country you visit. If you’re only staying in Greece, it is not required but if you travel to neighbouring countries such as Turkey, you will need to have it on you.

Nevertheless, even if you are not required to have a passport for your boat rental, it is always a good idea to carry one with you. In case of an emergency, a passport can serve as a valid form of identification and proof of citizenship.

Is chartering a yacht worth it?

Chartering a yacht near Athens can offer a unique and luxurious experience that is difficult to replicate with other types of travel. Great cruising areas, friendly people, stunning locations, good value for money, only charged 5 e for overnight stays for a 11m boat, some places not charged at all, would recommend it to anybody going to charter a yacht, only complaint would be the amount of space available in some of the harbours, how to visit again soon

We have visited Kea and Kythnos.30 minutes from the city center and another 45 minutes to swim in Cyclades! Kea and Kythnos are very close and you can visit them both in a one day! We start around 9:30 and return by the sunset.... Just a full day full of fun, sun and absolutely unique beaches!!

Enjoy the Greek way of living. Fresh fish, good salads and above all: infinite hospitality! We visited several villages (like Hydra, Ermioni, Perdika, Poros). However, if you enjoy the 'wild life' ... it's fun to have a sleep in on of the hundreds of nice bays. Go to Hydra ... nice city ... although crowded ... it's beautiful. Sleep in the bays near Poros (they are quiet and beautiful).

Loved Athens! It is a city that just keeps giving and surprising us at every turn. Biggest surprise was the quality of the good and wine. The house red wine in every restaurant was excellent. Totally loved the local cuisine especially the tzaki, Greek salad, moussaka and mixed grill... yum!
