Hire a boat in Syracuse, Italy

Syracuse in Sicily is a city of extraordinary history and endless attractions. Syracuse’s old town on the Island of Ortigia, is chock-a-full with national monuments and treasures. On the outskirts of the city is one of the earliest rock cave settlements in Europe - The famous Necropoli of Pantalica. Soak in the sun on the beaches of Calamosche and Marzamemi. And as you do so, feast on scrumptiously delicious cannoli – a crispy pastry filled with sweetened ricotta cheese. Whether its food or sights, you just can’t get your fill of Syracuse.

Marvel at the lighthouse on Isola delle Correnti

From a distance, the Isola delle Correnti lighthouse looks like a giant sandcastle, atop a tiny rock isle. As you wade across the shallow strip of water from Portopalo di Capo Passero beach, it becomes clear that this is no giant sandcastle, instead a huge octagonal stone tower. Standing 11mts high with balcony and lantern on the seaward side. And fortified ramparts, all around. From base to top, the lighthouse stands 277mts tall. Built in 1865, by Genio Civile the Isola delle Correnti lighthouse is in active use till this day.

Listen to stories of the Costa Saracena coast

For a longer sailing holiday, head to Catania on the Costa Saracena. Discover the white sand beach of Fontane Bianche. Observe from your boat deck, the rugged cliffs with stony lighthouses that hug the coast like the one on Capo Santa Croce. Stop in the Bay of Arcile, marvel at the Turtle Rock. Be moved by the singular beauty of the Castle of Brucoli. Your captain will be glad to share the legendary folklore surrounding these beautiful landmarks as you sail by.

Ortygia is the historic and wonderful old town of Syracrusa, a must to visit /see from the water and on foot. Have dinner in the Dumo square as the lights switch on in the evening. Getting lost in the myriad of alleyways is fun whilst shopping and trying out the various ice cream flavours.

Siracusa is among the best spots in Sicily combining both culture, history, shopping and beach life. Take advantage of the early morning or late evening hours to explore the old town of Ortigia before it gets too hot and crowded by which time you would have already found your preferred restaurant for lunch.

Great place, lovely city with some amazing coves and beaches nearby. Would definitely recommend renting a boat to explore the nearby areas. We had an amazing day out on the ocean, we found some breathtaking secluded coves. Syracuase is also a great historic city worth spensing several nights exploring the old city.
