Appalling experience, avoid at all costs. I chartered a Beneteau Cyclades named "Fairy" from Sailways over the summer as a bareboat with a crew of 8 (I skippered). We got unlucky with the weather with a few stormy nights, that can't be helped! What was far worse than the weather was the unacceptable condition of the the boat. Where to begin? 1. On day one of our charter we found out (the hard way) the a fuel line on the generator was simply not attached. This resulted in a large amount of diesel flowing into the hull when the generator was turned in and causing an pretty unbearable stench throughout the boat. As a result the whole crew and I, 8 in total, had to sleep on deck. I was eventually able to repair the line the following day (in fairness, with help from Sailways by phone) and use the bilge to get the majority of the diesel out of the hull. It then took us several hours to clean the hull but even at that, we could not get rid of the smell. Not a great first day! 2. The generators, when repaired, did not charge the boats batteries - they just didn't hold any significant charge. trying to charge the batteries using the engine onshore cable also did nothing either. This was despite numerous unsuccessful calls with the Sailways team to try to fix the issue. As a result the only way to use the electronics was to power up the generator whenever we needed electricity - so essentially every time we needed to shower, flush a toilet, boil a kettle or charge a phone etc. It didn't help that the radio's low voltage emergency noise would sound whenever the generator was off. 3. As a result of the boats batteries / charging system not working, we could not use the boats bow thrusters. Sailway's staff got to witness this first hand when I was reversing into mooring in Alimos ahead of check-in - the bow thrusters failed and caused the low voltage alarm to fail within seconds of use - not ideal trying to moore a 50ft yacht with no bow thrusters in windy conditions!; 4. We also had issues with the windlass, again because of the battery issue. Essentially the battery would only hold enough charge to drop the anchor once, even with the engines revving. So if it didn't catch on first pass we would be in a bit of trouble; 5. Requiring the use of the generator daily due to lack of functioning batteries resulted in a lot of additional diesel and significant expense (over €400 in fact); 6. The windows were all leaking. This meant wet beds on nights where it rained.... not a comfortable sleeping experience as you can imagine; 7. The dinghy engine accelerated in neutral - very dangerous as it becomes near impossible to regulate speed - its all or nothing; 8. We were told (by email) the boat has and electronic winch - it doesn't; 9. there is another diesel leak somewhere on the boat - every time we used the bilge we would be treated to a rainbow display as diesel spread on the surface of the water around the boat. Whatever about the smell, these leaks are horribly for the environment not to mention pretty embarrassing when moored up. generally the boat was in pretty shabby condition but the above are some of the real highlight (or lowlights I guess!). No resolution has been offered by Sailways at this point whose customer service went from friendly (before the charter) to very antagonistic after. All of the above was flagged with Sailways either during the charter or when we checked out - they refused to accept any responsibility and claim that, because is signed a piece of paper at the start of the charter confirming good order of the boat that all subsequent issues were not Sailways responsibility - as a qualified lawyer I find this assertion ridiculous. Unfortunately looking at the other reviews this seems like a common occurrence with this company. Oh one more thing, be careful with your personal data around these guys - they gave us back our deposit in a makeshift envelope that turned out to be the crew list for the previous charter including all of their personal info. When we flagged this with Sailways they suggested we stole the document which is obviously ridiculous - serious gas-lighting vibes!! Each of the 7 other crew on board will corroborate the above. Its a shame because it really should have been a lovely holiday. Note we chartered through Click and Boat so you can't actually see that the boat is from Sailways. The listed states that it is owned by Nikos - keep an eye out for boats called "fairy" and avoid this crowd at all costs! I am considering, and will likely take, legal action.
