The Netherlands by boat: which routes to take?

What better plan than to rent a boat to explore the wonders of the Netherlands? There are numerous boating areas in the country, all surrounded by simply stunning natural scenery. Are you ready to set sail? The options are endless!

  • Amsterdam

Ideal to rent a boat, the capital of the Netherlands hides treasures at every turn.

While cruising along the centuries-old canals, you can choose to dock on the banks and stop for a drink at one of the many typical restaurants that line the canals: absolutely fascinating!

In Amsterdam, you have the possibility to rent a boat without a license, so you can enjoy wonderful moments with your fellow travelers.

  • Friesland: Wadden Lakes, IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea

A former region of the Netherlands on the shores of the North Sea, Friesland (or Frisia), is rich with fascinating waterways, ancient villages and meadows. Ideal for long nature walks, cycling or sailing, renting a boat here is a great option.

The region's numerous canals and river connections will allow you to reach almost any town of interest. Do you plan to sail on the Wadden Sea (also known as the Waddenmeer)? Beware of the tides! Navigating this area with the help of a captain on board is always helpful to avoid unpleasant inconveniences and follow the best routes in the area.

  • Zeland: Zeeland Lakes, North Sea

Popular sailing destination in the region, Zeeland is one of the best places to rent a boat in the Netherlands. Enjoy an adventurous trip and collect unforgettable moments in the company of friends or family.

Contact the owner of the boat of your dreams and ask for all the necessary information about the area: together, you can plan a trip full of surprises!

Each listing is complete with boat specifications, comments from previous renters and a dedicated messaging tool. Use it for free to contact the owner and set up the details of the tour. In a few clicks, the boat will be ready and waiting for you.

Do I need a boat/sailing license to rent a boat in the Netherlands?

When it comes to regulations in the Netherlands, there are three options:

  • No license is required: if the boat is less than 15 meters and the maximum speed is 20 km per hour;
  • Klein Vaarbewijs 1: this license is required for boats traveling at more than 20 km per hour on rivers, canals and lakes;
  • Small Vaarbewijs 2: allows sailing on the open sea and large inland waters such as the Oosterschelde and Westerschade estuaries, the IJsselmeer and the Waddenzee.

Is it possible to rent a boat without a license?

The answer is yes. In most cases, especially in the case of boats rented by the hour, it is possible to request a motorboat without a license.

Before departure, the boat owner will give you a detailed explanation of the boat itself and the surroundings, as well as advice on the best mooring areas and tourist sites not to be missed.

If you are inexperienced, or still do not feel comfortable on board, you can request the presence of a captain, or inquire about some theory and practice courses, so that you can steer the helm on board during your next vacation.

When it comes to sailboats, experience is necessary and should be demonstrated, as steering the boat itself can be more complex and risky, depending on the winds.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in the Netherlands?

Compared to other European countries, it is possible to rent a boat in the Netherlands relatively cheaply, especially when compared to the typical sail and motor boats that are rented in the Mediterranean. Boat rental prices vary depending on the type of boat and the time of year: high or low season.

In general, most of the available boats can be rented by the hour, by the day, for half a week, for a weekend or for a whole week, so each traveler can find the solution that best suits him or her.

Average prices for boat rentals in the Netherlands:

  • Smaller motorboats, which may also be rented without a license, are generally rented by the hour at price of about $35/hour.
  • For a boat with a cabin, therefore with the possibility of sleeping on board, rental costs start from about $175/day, or $1,240/week, generally excluding fuel costs.
  • The cost of a sailboat rental in the Netherlands is about $175/day in low season.
