Sailing in Holland

The Netherlands has a coastline of over 520 kilometres, of which 353 kilometres are along the North Sea and the rest along the Wadden Sea and the Westerschelde. In addition, there are numerous inland water sources, from lakes to canals and rivers. The Netherlands is perfect for water sports enthusiasts. Not for nothing is sailing still very popular among the Dutch. There is something for every taste, for inexperienced, experienced, sporty or holiday sailors.

Can I hire a sailboat without a licence?

Would you like to charter a sailboat? In many cases it is possible, yes, to hire without a licence, but in these cases it is a good idea to have, and demonstrate, sailing experience.

  In the Netherlands, there are three options;

  • You don't need a licence if the boat is smaller than 15 metres
  • A navigation licence 1 is required for sailboats larger than 15 metres on rivers, canals and lakes.
  • With a sailing certificate 2 you can sail your boat on the open sea and on large inland waters like Ooster- and Westerschelde, the IJsselmeer and the Waddenzee.

How much does it cost to rent a sailboat in the Netherlands?

Renting a sailboat in the Netherlands is relatively cheap compared to other European countries. Prices vary depending on the type of sailboat, the location and the tourist season (high or low).

The water sports season in the Netherlands starts in March/April and ends in October. It is possible to find a great diversity of sailboats throughout the year, including in winter.

Various types of sailboats, such as the Bavaria or Beneteau, can be rented by the hour, by the day, half a week, weekend or whole week. Exchange days are usually on Fridays and Sundays, but it is worth discussing these details directly with the boat owner.

  • Open sailboats
  • Cabin sailing boats
  • Sail yachts

The rental prices of a sailboat depend on several factors. A type of sailboat like a Randmeer, Valk or Fox 22 you can rent from 50€ per day or around 450€ per week.

Prices for larger sailboats like a Beneteau, Dehler, Jeanneau or Dufour start from 150€ per day. For a week in low season you pay around 1000€, in high season prices are higher. For 2600€ you can hire a nice sailboat in the months of July/August.

What are the best places to sail in the Netherlands?

There are many popular water sports areas in the Netherlands, each with a different environment, different nature and various possibilities. From small to large lakes, the North Sea or the Wadden Sea. Each area has its own charm and challenges. The options are endless!

  • Frisian Sea
  • Markermeer and IJsselmeer
  • Friesian Lakes
  • Zeeland

The Wadden Sea

The Wadden Sea is the inland sea between the Dutch Wadden Islands and the Dutch mainland, Germany and Denmark. All the Dutch islands of the Wadden Sea, Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog lie in the North Sea and the Wadden Sea.

The Wadden Sea region stretches from Den Helder in the Netherlands to Esbjerg in Denmark, is 500 km long and has an average width of 20 km. Due to the great natural value of the area, the Wadden Sea is listed on the as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, the Wadden Islands are popular tourist destinations for both Dutch and Germans.

During your sailing trip you can spot seals, walk along the coast, dock on one of the islands and climb into one of the lighthouses, sunbathe on the beach or enjoy the terrace of one of the many beach pavilions.

Are you going sailing in the Wadden Sea? Then you'll have to take the tides into account! It is possible that you will be stranded on the sand. In the Wadden Sea there are dozens of places where you can run aground, especially if it is your first time there. Take this into consideration beforehand!

Markermeer and IJsselmeer

The IJsselmeer is the largest lake in the Netherlands. It has a surface area of 1133 km² and an average depth of 4.4 metres. The lake is located directly in the provinces of Friesland, Flevoland and North Holland. The IJsselmeer is surrounded by several towns and villages where you can easily rent a sailboat and head out on the water!

The most popular towns are Makkum, Stavoren, Lemmer, Lelystad and Enkhuizen. Due to the fact that there are virtually no currents in the IJsselmeer, this is a perfect destination for both beginner and advanced sailors.

Friesland

Is this your first time sailing in Friesland? Then one of the Friesian lakes is a perfect place to start. Most of the Friesian waters are connected to each other via canals and rivers, so the possible routes are endless. Small cabin sailboats or open sailboats with small drafts benefit from this sailing area because there are many shallow spots.

This sailing area is especially suitable for day trips on one of the lakes, or a longer sailing holiday in Friesland through its many lakes and canals. You can also start your sailing holiday in Friesland, near Sneek and Sneekermeer. Here, every first Saturday in August, the so-called "Sneekweek" begins. This whole week is dedicated to sailing competitions in various categories.

Zeeland

Another popular sailing area is the province of Zeeland! It is located in the southwest of the Netherlands. Would you like to charter a sailing boat in Zeeland? Enjoy a journey of pure adventure on the waters of Zeeland, which is easy considering that this province is surrounded by water. From the North Sea, to Grevelingenmeer, Veerse Meer, Westerschelde and Oosterschelde. Here you will find tides, streams (Oosterschelde), shallow water and strong currents. Given the tides and strong currents, this region is extremely suitable for experienced sailors. Would you like to go out to sea? Please discuss this in advance with the boat owner to enjoy your holiday safely.
