The Legend of Odysseus Cave 🌊🗿

There are two types of people in the world: those who have visited Mljet Island and dream about returning, and those who have yet to fall in love with the island’s “green forest” in the southern Adriatic.

Mljet’s northwest part has been a national park since 1960, making it the oldest in the Mediterranean. According to legend, this land played a key role in one of the greatest Greek myths—Homer’s Odyssey.

The island was home to the nymph Calypso, who held Odysseus captive for seven years in the tranquil paradise known as Ogygia. The ancient hero was shipwrecked during a storm near Mljet, and upon swimming to shore, he discovered a hidden cave, offering him refuge from the violent sea. This is where the Odysseus Cave legend begins.

The island, with its picturesque coves, warm sea, and the scent of pine trees, became Odysseus’ home for seven long years. While he mourned for his wife, Penelope, Calypso would charm him with promises of immortality. He was eventually freed by Zeus, and after his departure, Calypso died from sorrow.

For many years, the cave became the home of the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the rarest mammals in the world.

Explore the cave where the legendary hero once sought refuge, and create your own memories in this unforgettable corner of Croatia. 🌿

This was the highlight of our trip. Marko was ill and couldn't be the skipper. Ivan was his replacement and he was excellent. Made us feel very comfortable. The boat was fantastic. Clean and comfortable. Plenty of drinks and snorkelling equipment for everyone. We went to several islands and had several swims. It was very enjoyable and the price was well worth it.
