About the experience

Leave the beaten path behind and explore the raw, untamed beauty of Venice’s southern lagoon on this evocative 4-hour cruise. Starting from the peaceful Zattere promenade in the Dorsoduro district, we’ll sail away from the city’s bustling heart and into a quieter, wilder world—one shaped by centuries of history, mystery, and nature.

Our journey begins as we glide along the Giudecca Canal, passing historic waterfronts and artisan boatyards. Soon, we reach the wide southern lagoon, where an optional stop invites you to discover San Lazzaro degli Armeni, a serene monastery island filled with rare books, Armenian treasures, and lush gardens. Alternatively, we may sail past Poveglia, the infamous ghost island steeped in legend and wrapped in silence—a favorite among curious travelers seeking Venice’s mysterious side.

Next, we arrive at Malamocco, one of the oldest and most atmospheric villages in the lagoon. With its sleepy canals, stone bridges, and pastel homes, this ancient settlement offers a glimpse into the Venice that existed before the city we know today.

We then cruise along the long barrier island of Pellestrina, where quiet fishing life continues unchanged. Here, time slows down. Colorful houses line the sea wall, fishing nets dry in the breeze, and locals greet you with a nod. You’ll have a chance to step off and soak in this tranquil scene before we gently return to the city.

This tour is a beautiful alternative to Venice’s usual routes, perfect for those craving silence, authenticity, and untold stories.

As the years go by, I have been more and more wary of spending without prior knowledge or guarantees. I was nervous about this purchase - but all fears were allayed. Everything promised was delivered. Francesco was constantly in touch and we met near San Marco exactly on time. He was an excellent guide - he was available for questions, offered freely explanations about the areas we were boating in, made a detour for us to an island to check on a purchase, helped us take a finale photo by positioning the boat -- and he even took us into the Grand Canal (breaking a rule slightly) so we could enjoy that major thoroughfare. He is not an older "salty" captain, but instead an urbane, traveled polyglot. He has a Master's degree, lived abroad, is an entrepreneur, and a watch aficionado. We stayed on the boat past our official end time, and he helped the following day arrange for a special taxi to come get us at our hotel. This boat trip was 120% of what I had wanted it to be. I can say that having taken a day boat really makes me feel like I've "been" to Venice. This boat makes me think of movie stars and Lake Como. This captain made it the perfect day.

We had an amazing trip. We highly recommand Francesco's take on Venice. His knowdelege of the city and his kindness made this journey very special. The boat is beautiful and confortable, it was a birthday present for my girlfriend and this is by far the best experience we had in La Serenissa.
