Under Arab rule, the city became a major economic centre of the Mediterranean both commercially and culturally. The Normans added palaces to the city, while under Frederick II, the assimilation between Greek, Arab and Latin cultures was maintained.
In modern times, Palermo was occupied by the Aragonese, the Austrians and the Bourbons. Under Spain, the city was tinged with Baroque monuments.
