Dunkirk, the city of Jean Bart
Fifth most populous city in Hauts-de-France, Dunkirk was originally a small fishing village built at the western end of a bank sand more than a millennium ago. The construction of a chapel aimed at evangelizing the area around the village gave it its name since Dunkirk is made up of two Dutch words “duin” and “kerk” meaning “Dune” and “Church”. In its history, the city was the object of much covetousness on the part of the County of Flanders, the Kingdom of Spain as well as the Kingdom of England.
The city has, with the Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque, the third French port. In the port transits goods from all over the world as well as a ferry terminal towards Great Britain.
To see from near Dunkirk
Partially destroyed during the First World War, Dunkirk was the scene of Operation Dynamo as well as the siege of Dunkirk during the Second World War. Today, you can visit many things within the city itself such as the Leughenaer Tower, the Belfry or even the Saint-Eloi Church of neo-Gothic architecture. At the citadel of old warehouses and industrial buildings you can admire the last square three-masted ship preserved on French territory as well as the Sandettié which is the last French lightship to have been put into service.
By sea, we advise you to follow the coast in order to anchor off the Belgian or Dutch coasts near Ostend or Vlissingen. When renting a sailboat, we suggest you go offshore and cross the Channel to admire the fabulous White Cliffs of Dover.
