Sailing holidays in Marseille: where to go?

Coves, islands and beaches: the perfect excuse to rent a sailboat in Marseille! Considered one of the best sailing areas in France, choosing Marseille as the starting port for your trip will be a great choice.

What are the best sailing routes in Marseille?

If you decide to leave the Old Port of the city, make the first stop at the nearby archipelago of Frioul. Four beautiful islands will appear before you, giving you views of sandy beaches, rocky valleys and small coves, beautifully framed by nature.

  • Calanques National Park. A spectacular succession of beautiful coves, wild nature and emerald sea awaits you here. Port-Miou, Port-Pin, Morgiou, Sugiton... You will not be able to resist the charm of the coves of Marseille. This protected and timeless area stretches along 20 km of coastline: a beautiful playground for sailors on call.
  • Marseille is also a good starting point for boat trips to the most beautiful destinations on the French Riviera. Sail to Hyères and the Golden Isles, Cannes and the Lérins Islands, or start a crossing to Corsica.
  • The islands of Marseille: Across from the old port is Ratonneau, a meeting place for locals or visitors looking for a getaway between tours. Connected to this island, Pomègues also offers an atypical setting with its steep paths and high cliffs.
  • During your holiday on board, we recommend a stop on Ile de Planier, to admire the view from its 70-metre-high lighthouse. The island of Riou is a beauty to be discovered! Here, where ecology reigns supreme, the biodiversity of this nature reserve will not fail to amaze you.
  • The coast continues eastwards with the peculiarities of the coastal towns of Saint-Tropez and Cannes, protagonists of the French Riviera's nightlife and meeting point for international artists.

Marseille is beautiful. The Calanques are a must-see by boat, as are the Chateau d'If and the island of Frioul. The city itself is also very nice, it is fun to just wander around and explore different neighborhoods beyond the Vieux Port and the Notre Dame. Great food and nice people.

Marseille and Cassis are amazing and the Calanques just stunning! We loved visiting the caves and jumping off the cliffs. In Marseille, we highly recommend taking the fun little train tour - a highlight of our day trip! Cassis is quiter but the ideal place to spend a week soaking up the gorgeous weather.

Marseille is perfect for a long weekend in the Calanques or to spend a week and go a bit further to Porquerolles. The Vieux Port, in the heart of Marseille is an excellent base, with all that you need for vittalling the boat and very convenient in terms of transport infrastructure. In high season it is important to book any marinas in advance (e.g. for Cassis need to call at 6am the same day to try to get a place). Keep an eye on the weather, as a strong Mistral might be a big constraint to your options.

We where visiting Les Iles by boat and it was a very nice trip! Our skipper Emmanuel drove with us around the whole island. We could cliffdiving and snorkeling there and hat a great sight! Even though there where many boats around because of the nice wheater, we could find nice and even lonley spots.
