We had a very nice boat trip. The boat was fine and we got a good explanation how everything works. Was easy to drive even without a boating license.

Nice boat without license required Unfortunately it was missing cushions in back, but it was okay anyway. Also with Bluetooth sound that gives possibilities to hear music

Highly recommended to hire Whaly, a boat where no license is required with easy pick-up from Rovinj Harbour. Alen and his son provided us with some great destination tips. Really worth hiring this boat for a day, you'll have a whale of a time!

Rent a boat without a license: is it possible?

Renting a boat is one of the most exciting ways to experience your next vacation destination. From the hidden coves of the Mediterranean to tropical island archipelagos, taking to the water opens up an entirely unique perspective on coastal travel.

A common question many travelers ask when planning their trip is whether a nautical license is required to charter a vessel. Fortunately, Click&Boat caters to all experience levels, offering flexible solutions whether you want to captain a boat yourself or relax with a professional skipper on board.

Whether you need a license depends on your chosen sailing destination, the boat type, and local maritime regulations. When a license is required and you don't hold one, hiring a local skipper allows you to enjoy your dream trip in complete safety and peace of mind.

How much does it cost to rent a boat without a license?

Renting a boat is an accessible way to explore the sea at your own pace. On Click&Boat, you can choose from a fleet of 1490 available boats, with prices starting as low as €124 per day. The final cost depends on factors such as the destination, season, vessel type, and whether you opt to hire a professional skipper.

Some of the most popular places to try this are Croatia, especially around Zadar and Split, as well as Spain, France and Mykonos.

Yacht Charter without a license?

If you have basic boating experience and feel confident, renting a boat without a license is often possible. It depends on local maritime legislation and the boat owner's policy. In many destinations, renting small motorboats, RIBs, or even certain sailing boats without a license is fully permitted up to specific power and length limits.

France: You can charter certain sailing boats without a license, but motorboats can only be hired if their length is under 5 meters and power is under 6hp.

Italy: Sailing boats require a license, but motorboats up to 40hp can be rented without a permit—perfect for a self-drive trip along the Italian coast.

Spain: Regulations allow license-free navigation for small motorboats (under 5m and 15hp) and sailboats (under 6m) within limited distances from the shore for private use.

In countries like Brazil or Portugal, formal qualifications are strictly required for all motorized vessels. If you hold an international license, it is always worth checking if it is recognized in your destination. If not, renting a boat with a captain ensures you won't miss out on the adventure.

I chose to charter the boat without a license, now what?

If you choose to navigate without a license, keeping safety a top priority ensures a memorable and smooth trip. Be sure to follow these essential guidelines:

  • Zero Alcohol: Never consume alcohol or impaired substances while operating the vessel.
  • Safety Gear: Ensure every passenger has a properly fitted life jacket and all required safety equipment is on board.
  • Distance Limits: Maintain the legal distance from the shoreline, swimmer zones, and other vessels.
  • Weather Checks: Monitor weather forecasts continuously throughout your trip.
  • Boat Capacity: Respect maximum passenger limits and fuel reserve requirements.
  • Sun Protection: Stay hydrated and protect yourself against sun exposure.

If you prefer to leave these operational responsibilities to an expert, booking with a skipper is always the easiest solution.

How to rent a skippered boat?

Renting a skippered boat on Click&Boat is simple:

  • Enter your desired destination in the search bar.
  • Apply the "With skipper" filter.
  • Browse the available fleet and choose the perfect boat for your trip.

If you already have a specific boat in mind, check the listing description to see if the owner offers a skippered option before completing your booking.

Why rent a skippered boat?

Hiring a captain allows you to relax completely while an expert handles navigation, anchoring, and safety.

Beyond handling the boat, a local skipper brings invaluable regional knowledge. They can guide you to hidden coves, quiet beaches, and authentic local spots that standard tourist routes often miss. With a skipper on board, all you need to do is sit back, soak up the sun, and enjoy the journey!
