La Specia is cool place to boat. You are not allowed to go to Cinque Terra without patent. Nevertheless, beautiful landscapes clean water.

The area was lovely on our trip out on the boat. This particular area has a lot to explore, and we did some serious mileage exploring the islands and coves nearby. The bay of poets was gorgeous, although be careful of anchoring into the rocks! This is a great area if you want to travel around, although there are plenty of mooring spots on the mainland, and near the islands. We were slightly unlucky in that the wind picked up and the sea was fairly rough, so we struggled with mooring a bit. On land, there are plenty of lovely places to visit, beaches, shops, restaurants, walks etc... We'd definitely come back.

A good starting point for portovenere and the side or Lerici with beautiful bays.

Cruising around La Specia and Chique Terra in Fabrizio's boat was an absolutely fantastic, unforgettable experience for my wife and I. It was easily the highlight of our Vacation in Northern Italy. We motored around the calm waters in the Gulf of La Spezia, cruising past San Terenzo and Lerici to the East, then cutting back west exiting the gulf and heading into the sea between Porto Venere and Terrizzo. This is when things got interesting. The water by Porto Venere is very calm--great for taking a break and sunbathing. But once we entered the sea beyond the narrow space between Porto Venere and the Island, things got pretty choppy. It took some time to get used to the waves, constantly adjusting the throttle to avoid pounding over higher-frequency chop while maintaining enough speed to ride over the lower-frequency swells. Once we got used to it, we had a great time cruising past all 5 villages of the Cinque Terra, although you cannot dock the boat at any of them. Doing so at a medium pace didn't take as long as we expected. On calmer waters, you could probably get up and down the coast of Cinque Terra in little more than an hour. We took our time though, anchoring for lunch in a little alcove between Cornelia and Vernazza. And taking things nice and slow on the way back to the Gulf. Overall a fantastic experience.
