Sailing in Belgium

Belgium has the shortest coastline in the North Sea - only 65 kilometers, but what a landscape: sandy shores, dunes and narrow colorful little houses dotting the coastline! On the other hand, Belgium has one of the strongest river networks in Europe, with all canals connecting the country's major cities. In other words, there are many possible navigable routes you can take on your trip through Belgium. Stunning views and vivid experiences await you. Intrigued? Are you in the mood for it?

You may be wondering: Where to find a yacht for charter? It's easy! At Click&Boat you can find sailboats, yachts and speedboats for all tastes, colors and budgets!

Chartering a yacht in Belgium: do I need a sailing license?

If you have ever been to the Netherlands and rented a boat there, then you know everything: the rules for chartering yachts in Belgium are exactly the same as in the Netherlands.

Depending on the type of boat, you can charter a yacht with or without a license.

  • No license is required if the boat length is less than 15 meters and the boat speed does not exceed 20 km per hour.
  • License Klein Vaarbewijs 1: required for boats faster than 20 km/h on rivers, canals and lakes.
  • License Klein Vaarbewijs 2: allows sailing on the open sea and the larger inland waterways of the Osterschelde and Westerschelde estuaries.

However, if you have no experience in steering even small boats, this is not a problem! The boat owner will provide you with all the information and advice before you set sail.

Belgian ports: where to anchor?

There are several ports in Belgium where you can charter a yacht, such as:

  • Brugge-Zeebrugge
  • Oostende
  • Blankenberg
  • Nieuwpoort
  • Kinrooi
  • Antwerpen

Belgium has four major ports along its coast. The largest port, that of Zeebrugge, is primarily a ferry terminal. The seaport of Brugge or Port of Zeebrugge is the second largest in Belgium and one of the most important in Europe. At the port of Brugge-Zeebrugge you will also find a marina and a fishing port. The other is the port of Oostende. What these two ports have in common is that they are both connected to Brugge via the Belgian river network. The two smallest ports on the Belgian coast are Blankenberg and Nieuwpoort. They serve as both fishing and recreational facilities.

All anchorages are equipped with standard facilities such as electricity, water and sanitary facilities. Before setting out, it is important to check availability and reserve a spot in advance, and also ask what facilities are available. Mooring fees vary depending on the length of the boat and the season. Costs are generally higher in high season, in the summer.

What to see and do with a yacht charter in Belgium?

The coastline of Belgium stretches for only 66 kilometers. The almost entirely urbanized coastline stretches from De Panne to Noquet-les-Zoutes. The coast and its 19 seaside resorts are popular with locals and tourists alike.

Many Belgians come to the coast as soon as the sun begins to peek through the clouds. The two most popular and visited towns are also the furthest away from each other. De Panne, near the French border, and Knokke Heist, near the Dutch border.
