I rented the sailboat "Callisto" from Iris Yachtcharter in El Arenal for the period from November 1st to 8th, 2025. The boats are moored right next to a shipyard where repairs are constantly underway. Quiet time on board is therefore hardly possible (it's not a problem when you're underway). The boat smelled strongly of oil, the winches weren't working properly, and the lifeboat was stowed in the lazarette in such a way that it would have been impossible to access in an emergency. I was informed beforehand that I could sail the boat alone. At the handover, however, I was suddenly told I should have a crew member with me. I had to actively ask for additional fenders and a water hose to fill the water tank. The full holding tank was dismissed with the explanation that it would "empty itself" if the valves were open (any additional questions or requests were too much trouble). Due to strong winds, the sails couldn't be raised. I accepted the boat in its current condition because I planned to take it for a test sail in Palma Bay the following day and was told I could report any problems immediately. I'm familiar with this policy from other rental companies in Palma. The next day, I went out to test the boat. While hoisting the mainsail, I discovered two large tears, which ended the test sail. I immediately returned to the harbor and reported the damage. The owner tried to replace the sail but couldn't find a suitable replacement. Instead of offering a solution, I was advised against sailing alone, as the boat couldn't be sailed single-handed and my skills were supposedly insufficient. The following day, given the numerous defects (the smell of oil, broken winches, an inaccessible lifeboat, a torn mainsail, and cleats) and the poor communication (I had received a "report" from the owner on Sunday about my docking maneuver in strong winds, even though I had been assisted by staff), I decided to cancel the contract. I don't expect a perfect boat, but one I can rely on, especially when sailing alone. I wanted nothing more to do with the boat or the owner and booked a hotel room to enjoy my vacation. As a "concession," the provider offered to waive one day's charge. However, the lack of reliability, safety concerns, poor communication, and ruined vacation weren't worth it. I'd rather have my money back. I haven't received my deposit back either. The reviews show that I'm not the only one who's had repairs done at the expense of the vacationers. I've learned my lesson: If you value safety and a relaxing vacation, you should definitely avoid booking with this provider. I'll have to pay more attention to that in the future.
Frank wanted to sail our BAV Cr. 33 single handed. Our yacht was sailed single handed many times before so we agreed but unfortunately Frank did obviously not have enough sailing experience to sail without a crew. We got p.e. complaints from a very worried boat owner when Frank tried to "park" our 33 next to his yacht. Moreover Frank presented us a totally torn main sail after one day of sailing. We check the sails before every charter but could not do a double check together with Frank because of heavy winds during check-in. This is why we took the sail to the sailmaker without charging Frank and even offered a day of refund. We got the sail back within a day but then Frank wanted to cancel his charter contract and get his money back. He left the boat and returned the keys ... maybe also because of 2 very stormy days that were forcast for the end of the charter week. As a "farewell" we got a one-star google recommendation.
The attention was great from day 0 with the team and they helped us via WhatsApp at all times in case we needed any extra information, information about coves, marinas, etc.
