Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to properly explore Heraklion itself, as we were staying about 25 minutes away and only went there for our sailing cruise. From what we saw, the port area was convenient and easy to reach by taxi, and everything around the marina seemed well organized. Hopefully, next time we’ll have the opportunity to spend more time in the city itself.

We rented a motorboat and got really great explanations about how it worked. The boat was amazing, and along the way we even spotted two turtles. It was such a wonderful experience!

We had an absolutely wonderful day out on the sea with Notos Mare. From the very beginning, everything was handled professionally and with great care. We had initially booked the Axopar 22, but because of expected winds they upgraded us to a RIB boat — and we’re so glad they did! It was the perfect choice for the conditions. Our captain, Gregory, made the trip truly unforgettable. As he proudly said, “I was born here and I will die here,” and his love for Crete really showed. He shared so much information about the island and the places we visited, all in excellent English. Gregory’s warmth, humor, and knowledge made us feel both welcome and safe throughout the day. We visited Balos and Gramvousa, as well as a few other beautiful stops we requested along the way. Even when the waves picked up higher than anticipated, Gregory’s skillful navigation meant we always felt completely safe and in good hands. This was a day to remember, and we highly recommend Notos Mare to anyone looking for a professional, friendly, and memorable boat trip in Crete. Thank you for giving us such a fantastic experience!

What season is the best to charter a yacht in Crete?

The weather in Crete is generally pleasant, with hot summers and mild winters.

The high season for boat rentals typically spans from May to September, when the temperatures soar and the skies are clear, creating the perfect conditions for leisurely sailing. During this period, you can expect long days of sunshine and warm sea temperatures, making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

However, it's worth noting that this period can be quite busy and prices may be higher. If you prefer a more tranquil experience and lower prices, the low season, which runs from October to April, offers its own charm.

Where to hire a boat in Crete?

One of the nearest and most renowned ports is the Port of Heraklion, located in the capital city of Crete. It serves as a major hub for boat rentals, offering a wide range of options to suit different preferences and budgets.

Another prominent port is the Port of Chania, situated on the island's western coast. With its charming Venetian harbor and bustling waterfront, it attracts numerous visitors seeking boat rental services.

Additionally, the Port of Agios Nikolaos, nestled on the eastern part of the island, is another sought-after destination for boat hires.

Where to sail on your yacht charter in Crete?

Crete is the cradle of the Minoan civilization, whose heart and most important place in terms of archaeological wealth is Knossos. It is worth taking a walk around the city of Heraklion, which is the largest urban centre on the island.

You can also visit the monuments from the time of the Venetian occupation, such as the Loggia and the old harbour with the famous fortress of Koules.

In the west of the island, lies the charming town of Chania. Although it was partially destroyed by bombing during World War II, it still attracts crowds of tourists every year with its beauty.

On the east of the island is the town of Agios Nikolaos, famous for its numerous beaches. In the centre of the town is the "bottomless" Vulisméni Lake. The main marina is located to the south of the city and from there, you can take a nice boat ride to the island of Agioi Pantes.

Heraklion, the largest and most important city of Crete, its historical capital, named after the hero Hercules has many monuments you won’t want to miss. There are also many picturesque beaches and their diversity allows everyone to find a quiet place to relax with the kids, as well as to spend time relaxing and playing water sports.

The Bay of Balos is one of the most beautiful places in both Crete and all of Greece. White sand with a slightly pinkish tinge and an unbelievable crystal blue sea. The easiest way to reach it is by boat, from the port of Kissamos.

Visit the deserted beach of Glyka Nera, swim at the meeting of the three Mediterranean seas, dive directly from your own boat, and discover the wonderful underwater world.

By hiring a sailboat or catamaran, you can sail from east to west on a real cruise, enjoying the magnificent landscapes of Crete. With your Crete boat hire you can even reach many places such as Santorini, Athens or the beautiful cities on the Turkish coast such as Antalya, Bodrum or Marmaris.

Hire a boat in Crete with or without a skipper?

Having a professional skipper onboard provides a sense of security and peace of mind, especially for those who may not have extensive sailing experience. Skippers are well-versed in navigating the local waters, familiar with the best routes, and knowledgeable about the hidden gems of Crete. They can offer valuable insights and recommendations.

On the other hand, sailing without a skipper grants you the freedom to chart your own course and explore at your own pace. However, you need a recognised sailing licence and a VHF radio operator's licence to rent a boat without a skipper in Crete.
