Famous people in Porto Ercole

The first mention of Porto Ercole dates back to 1296, when Margherita Aldobrandeschi, Countess of Savona, ordered the construction of a tower called Torre di Terra, the most ancient heart of the town. In 1610, on the beach at Porto Ercole, Caravaggio died of an illness – probably of paludism – as he was preparing to return to Rome after obtaining a papal pardon for a crime he had committed four years earlier. In more recent times, the Dutch royal family maintained a summer residence in the second half of the 20th century. Historic sites and points of interest

Today, the main places of interest are the 16th-century Forte Filippo and the 18th-century Forte Santa Caterina, which were part of the defensive complex of the promontory. The Palazzo dei Governanti overlooks the beautiful square of Santa Barbara, which overlooks the Port. Also worth mentioning is the Corsini Botanical Garden, where numerous tropical and subtropical rarities can be found that have managed to acclimatize thanks to the area's extraordinary microclimate.

Anniversaries and events

Since 2007, Porto Ercole has been celebrating the "Night of the Pirates", an event that reconstructs real events from 1544, when the pirate Barbarossa and his Ottoman fleet ravaged the town. For the occasion, everyone dresses up as pirates and a team treasure hunt game is organized. The Palio di Porto Ercole, on the other hand, is a rowing regatta – consisting of gozzi (small, colorful rowing boats) and four oarsmen – held in the harbor in June.
